olympics Trivia Quiz # 3

This is Olympics Quiz # 3, GOOD LUCK! You can head back to the main Olympics Quiz index, or try your luck at a random quiz.

Olympics Question 1
1956 Melbourne Olympics - Who won the women's 1500 metres?
 Ludmilla Bragina
This event wasn't run until 1972
 Linda Papp
 Edith Szewinska
The correct answer is 'This event wasn't run until 1972'
In the 1950s, women were not allowed to run distances beyond 200 metres. Even the 400m was not run until the 1960 games in Rome. Subsequent games proved the "error" of this rule, as the likes of Koch, Joan benoit, and Waitz made great sport.

Olympics Question 3
Chessart's Sixth Millionaire Quiz - Jim Thorpe won the decathlon at the 1912 Olympics but was denied the gold medal. Why?
He refused to participate in the award ceremony, in protest of the treatment of Native Americans.
He bumped another runner in the 1500-meter run.
 He had played professional baseball.
He tested positive for an illegal substance.
The correct answer is 'He had played professional baseball.'
The archaic Olympic rules have been relaxed now. The idea that all Olympic athletes were amateurs always was somewhat of a myth, as substantial 'expense' money was sometimes paid to the athletes to finance their training and participation.

 United Kingdom
 Sweden
The correct answer is 'United States'
They took place, more specifically, in St. Louis, Missouri in 1904, despite Chicago winning the bid to host. The Olympic Games did not return to the US until 1932. Of about 650 competitors, less than 100 were not from America, many of these were Canadian, and the games were not even attended by baron de Coubertin, the founder of the Modern Olympic Games.

Olympics Question 7

 Svetlana Khorkina
 Carly Patterson
 Nicoleta Sofronie

Carly had a great competition and won her first medal when she was only 16 years old.

Olympics Question 8
RMS Olympic-First Born of the Olympic Class Ships - What caused the passenger trade to decline in the 1920's?
 Great Depression
 post war
 Titanic disaster
 mechanical problems
The correct answer is 'Great Depression'
The Olympic suffered through the Great Depression. It tried such things as making the old third-class into "tourist third-class." This allowed passengers to experience second-class accommodations without having to pay for the extras that go along with second-class. In one year, the Olympic experienced her worse passenger trade ever; only transporting about 10,000 passengers that year.

Olympics Question 9
Women's National Team - Who captained the 1999 World Cup Champion, the 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning, and the 1995 World Cup bronze medal-winning U.S. national teams?
 Julie Foudy
 Kristine Lilly
 Mia Hamm
 Carla Overbeck
The correct answer is 'Carla Overbeck'
Carla was the national team captain, but retired. She still plays in the WUSA. Julie Foudy took over for her.

Olympics Question 10
The Eurovision Song Contest - FunTrivia Edition! - Here comes Peach for another 'flourish'. She is now singing her song for Norway, a country famous for their nil point efforts. Cover your ears, people. Here she goes...

'Take me to the fjörds and hold me close
Stavanger and the cold, wet snow
Svalbard! Svalbard! Torshavn and Faeroe
Two hammers and a town called Oslo!
Wooo!'

Well at least they'll get a point from Sweden. I hope. When the Winter Olympics was held in Norway in 1994, what town were the majority of the events held in?

Hint: The answer is also where the games were actually held.
 Hamar
 Oslo
 Bergen
 Lillehammer
The correct answer is 'Lillehammer'
The Lillehammer 1994 Winter Olympics were interesting, because it was the only time that the Winter Olympics were held two years after the last ones. This is because in 1986, it was decided that the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics should not be held on the same year, but on alternating even-numbered years. This came into effect after the 1992 Winter Olympic games in Albertville, France.

Lillehammer beat off stiff competition from Anchorage, Östersund/Åre (in Sweden), and Sofia (capital of Bulgaria) to host the Winter Olympics in 1994. There were 67 countries competing, and a total of 1737 participants in 61 events (in six sports).
