This is Animal Quiz # 6, GOOD LUCK! You can head back to the main Animal Quiz index, or try your luck at a random quiz.Animal Question 1
All about the Clouded Leopard - How long do they live in the wild on average?
The correct answer is '10 - 15 years'
Animal Question 2
Seahorses - Amazing and Beautiful - When keeping seahorses in a home aquarium...
The correct answer is 'Food sources must be sized according to snout size.'
Seahorses have no teeth; their food is sucked through their tubular snout. All food must be sized accordingly - if it is too big they will not be able to eat it, likewise large seahorses show little interest in food that is too small.
Animal Question 3
USEF Show Jumping - While walking the course, you count off 24 big steps between two oxers. How many strides should you and your horse take between these two jumps?
The correct answer is '5'
Each big step that riders take equals 3 feet, so there are 72 feet between the two jumps. Horses typically need 6 feet to land from a jump and 6 feet to take off, so that leaves 60 feet from the landing of one jump to the take off of the next. A horse's stride is about 12 feet, so 5 strides should be taken.
Animal Question 4
Ferrets - Ferrets were once used for rabbit hunting, true or false?
The correct answer is 'True'
Animal Question 5
The Wonderful Water Buffalo - True or False: The water buffalo has very large ears.
The correct answer is 'False'
They have small ears but they can hear just fine.
Animal Question 6
Why Does My Cat Not Only Do That, But This Too? - Something else my cats do that strikes me as a bit odd is that of them "chattering" their teeth. This usually occurs when they're looking out a window at birds, or whatever else they may be seeing, and then all of a sudden they'll start making this chattering-like sound with their mouths. It might best be compared to the chattering noise we humans sometimes make with our teeth like when we feel cold from chilly weather outside. Why is it, though, that my cat is making this sound?
The correct answer is 'Both Of These'
During my research, I found both of these reasons to be most likely true. Cats make this chattering-like sound by opening their mouth slightly, pulling their lips back, then opening and closing their jaws very rapidly. The noise that results is a cross between what we know of as lip smacking and teeth chattering. I read that feline behaviorists believe this chattering noise to be similar to that of a cat's special "neck bite", also known as their "killing bite", because that's what cats in the wild use to kill prey quickly and efficiently before such prey ever has a chance to even put up a struggle. And thus, this also helps in making sense as to why a cat may feel excited and/or frustrated when they see prey they can't get to; because it's exciting to them to see potential prey they can inflict this bite on but then again also very frustrating for the housecat who can't actually get to it.
Animal Question 7
Birds of Prey: Kings of the Sky - The smallest bird of prey lives in Africa.
The correct answer is 'True'
The African falconet is the smallest bird of prey. Although it is small, it can catch animals almost as large as itself.
Animal Question 8
What do EWE know about Sheep Breeds? - Which native "fat tail" sheep of Asia was brought to the United States in the early 1900s to satisfy those who were not only fashion conscious but wealthy as well?
The correct answer is 'Karakul'
Now considered a rare breed, the American Karakul sheep is distinct for many reasons. For example, they store fat in their tails as do camels and they are the only sheep born with a "fur" fleece coat- usually a deep black in color. Unfortunately for the Karakul, this early soft coat cannot be shorn off like a regular fleece but must be harvested by killing and skinning a lamb within 2 days of its birth.
Animal Question 9
Separating the Sheep from the Goats - Which animals have rectangular pupils?
The correct answer is 'Both'
There are many theories for why goats and sheep have horizontal, rectangular pupils. This may give them better night vision, or may give them better ability to regulate the amount of light that hits the retina.
Animal Question 10
I Want To Be Under the Sea! - This worm has feathered bristles along its sides that can deliver painful stings. It lives under rocks and can can reach six inches in length.
The correct answer is 'Orange fireworm'
The other three worms are tubeworms who prefer to retreat when they feel threatened.
