animal Trivia Quiz # 44

This is Animal Quiz # 44, GOOD LUCK! You can head back to the main Animal Quiz index, or try your luck at a random quiz.

Animal Question 1
Labrador Retrievers - the Number One Dogs - Labradors are great hunting dogs, but what are their "sleeping accommodations" of choice?
Out in the chain link kennel enjoying the fresh air.
In your home, in your bed if at all possible.
Tied out on a chain to give the impression of freedom.
In your truck, after all, when you hunt, isn't that where you sleep?
The correct answer is 'In your home, in your bed if at all possible.'
While Labradors are cable of handling many different "sleeping accommodations", their favorite is to be indoors, and many love sleeping with their owners if allowed. If left outside, in the kennel, or in the truck, they often bark for attention and out of boredom.

Animal Question 2
Another Dose of Doggerel - The American pit bull terrier was originally bred as a guard dog.
 True
 False
The correct answer is 'False'
It was bred to fight other dogs. Because the owners were in the pit along with the dogs, handling them, human-aggressive animals were not tolerated.

Animal Question 3
The Man-Eaters - Well, that fellow wins the prize for solo man-eating, but what about team effort? Where did the incident allegedly occur in 1945, involving the most humans eaten by multiple crocodiles?
 Ramree Island, Burma
 Labuan Island, Brunei
 Penang Island, Malaya
 Poro Island, Phillipines
The correct answer is 'Ramree Island, Burma'
The battle of Ramree Island was fought in January and February of 1945. On the 19th of February the last Japanese defenders were attempting to retreat to the mainland, wading across 10 miles of mangrove swamps. 900 left the island, and only 500 reached the mainland.

It has been alleged that most of the remainder were eaten by the thousands of saltwater crocodiles that lived in the area. If true, it is the greatest animal disaster of all time, which is how it is listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records." However, sceptics have cast doubt on the story, pointing out that none of the survivors reported being attacked. If there were 400 successful attacks by crocs that night, there should have been at least a few unsuccessful ones.

The sceptics say that disease, exhaustion, British gunfire, and ordinary drowning probably claimed most of the 400 Japanese lives. Even if this is true, however, crocodiles are opportunistic feeders, and though they may not have killed many of the soldiers, they still would have eaten bodies they found. Perhaps the story will never be conclusively proven true or false, but for now it stands in the record books.

Animal Question 4
Spiders - Where are Red Widow Spiders found?
from northern Florida to southern Canada
 all over southeastern United States
 Central America
 central and southern Florida
The correct answer is 'central and southern Florida'
Red Widows (L. bishopi) are found in the scrub-pine and palmettos in southern and central Florida.

Animal Question 5
Marine Biology at a Glance - The phylum Porifera includes what animals?
 sharks
 crabs
 sponges
 fish
The correct answer is 'sponges'

Animal Question 6
Miracle Max's Mixed Animal-Associated Quiz - Which of these animals is most likely to be found in a forest of conifers?
 pronghorn antelope
 Kaibab squirrel
 lion
 mountain goat
The correct answer is 'Kaibab squirrel'
Conifers include evergreens such as spruce, pine, fir, and juniper. The name comes from their cone shape. Pronghorn antelope would be found mostly in areas of low growing vegetation, as would lions--of course on different continents. Mountain goats are most often found a considerable distance above timberline.

Animal Question 7
The Maned Wolf - What is the maned wolf's nickname?
 The long-legged wolf
 The stilt-legged red wolf
 The fox-wolf
 The stilt-legged fox
The correct answer is 'The stilt-legged fox'
The maned wolf resembles a stilt-legged fox. It is around 3 feet high, and weighs around 50 pounds, with most of that height coming from the legs. It's also a beautiful red color, with black and white highlights, much like the red fox.

The correct answer is 'from a mosquito bite'
I would estimate that 75 percent of the dogs at our shelter had this serious condition (but it is curable).
