animal Trivia Quiz # 29

This is Animal Quiz # 29, GOOD LUCK! You can head back to the main Animal Quiz index, or try your luck at a random quiz.

Animal Question 1
Reptiles and Amphibians - Which of these lizards is legless?
 Alligator Lizard
 Glass Lizard
 Banded Gecko
 Green Anole
The correct answer is 'Glass Lizard'
It is often mistaken for a snake, but snakes have neither eyelids nor ear openings.

Animal Question 2
Harrier - Which of the following did NOT figure in the development of the harrier?
 American foxhound
 beagle
 English foxhound
 Talbot hound
The correct answer is 'American foxhound'
The American foxhound is a more recent breed than the harrier, so it couldn’t figure in its development. English foxhounds and beagles are commonly seen in the studbooks of harriers. The Talbot hound and the St. Hubert hound, while they no longer exist, are thought to be the basis of nearly all scent hounds today.

Animal Question 3
What Do You Know About "Designer Dogs"? - "Designer dogs" have "hybrid vigor," which makes them healthier than purebreds.
 True
 False
The correct answer is 'False'
As veterinarian Dr Zammit said in reference to "designer dogs," "There is a concept called 'hybrid vigour' where you cross two different breeds and you get an animal that is stronger and sounder but to do that you have to start with the right genetic material to begin with - and that's not happening." Most reputable breeders of healthy, quality purebreds will not sell dogs to breeders who intend to produce "designer dogs." So the breeding stock for most "designer dogs" programs are animals that have had no health testing, have never been shown, have never earned any working titles, and are very unlikely to be healthy, quality animals.

In addition, "hybrid vigor" has never been proven in the dog.

Animal Question 4
Conformational Defects - Your friend describes a horse as having a "parrot-mouth". What does she mean?
the horse's upper teeth are crooked
the horse whinneys whenever someone talks
 the horse has deformed lips
 the horse has an overbite
The correct answer is 'the horse has an overbite'
A "parrot-mouth" is a term used to describe a horse who's top teeth are further forward than his bottom teeth, giving him an overbite. There can be different degrees of this problem, with the most extreme cases resulting in severe difficulty eating and drinking.

Animal Question 5
British Birds: Behaviours, and Identification - Which thrush is named after the bird's preferred eating habits?
 Song
 Great
 Blackbird
 Mistle
The correct answer is 'Mistle'
It has a particular fondness for the berries of the mistletoe.

Animal Question 6
Great Australian Fauna - This unique animal is a marsupial with long pointed finely-furred ears. It is usually greyish in colour with a bluish tinge and is white underneath. It has a long muzzle and a white tip on its tail. What Australian animal am I talking about?
 Hopping Mouse
 Long Nosed Bandicoot
 Bilby
 Short Nosed Bandicoot
The correct answer is 'Bilby'
The bilby is found in the desert and is very rare. The bilby lives in a burrow to help keep it cool. The bilby has an excellent sense of smell and hearing. When it sleeps it does not lie down, but squats on its hind legs tucking its muzzle between its forelegs. The long ears are then folded forward over its eyes. Its diet consists mainly of insects, mice, lizards and some plant matter. The bilby is known as the Australian Easter bunny, which helps with the advertisement of it being an endangered species.

Animal Question 7
English Springer Spaniels - The following is not true of an English Springer Spaniel.
 They need to be confined.
 They do need daily grooming.
They do not shed at all.
They can live comfortably in city apartments.
The correct answer is 'They do not shed at all.'
The English Springer Spaniel sheds moderately. They must be groomed regularly as their coats tend to pick up burrs, weeds and other things. They can live in an apartment as long as they are exercised regularly. They do need to have a fenced yard as they are a curious breed and will tend to wander if not confined.

Animal Question 8
The North American Beaver - What is the lifespan of the beaver?
 15 - 21 years
 13 - 30 years
 12 years
 5 years
The correct answer is '15 - 21 years'
The beaver can live 15 - 21 years in the wild. Much longer in captivity. (Wild! America and Wildlife Fact File)

Animal Question 9
The Great Cane Toad Caper - A method of cane toad control in Australia is urgently needed. Which of the following methods has been suggested?
 Biological control
 Legislative control
 Chemical control
 All of these.
The correct answer is 'All of these.'
The most obvious way of controlling cane toads is to use biological control - the very thing cane toads were introduced into Australia to do! Recent reseach has suggested that gene technology could play a role in this regard. Work is also being carried out into the possibility of isolating the toad's sex pheromone - if this can be done, then the toad's breeding cycle may be able to be disrupted. Chemical control has also been put forward as a possibility, although a suitable "toadicide" has yet to be developed. Legislative control is already in place, with quarantine requirements enforced throughout Australia. Members of the public already enforce their own kind of control, with reports of Queensland farmers taking great delight in squashing cane toads on the road with their cars!

Animal Question 10
Just Horsin' Around - BACK TO BASICS - When leading a horse in the US, you should stand -- the horse.
 behind
 to the right of
 to the left of
 in front of
The correct answer is 'to the left of'
(At least where I'm from in the US) it's standard to lead your horse from the left, so your right arm is nearest to his side. We also tighten the girth from the left and mount from the left. Now I don't know because we drive on the wrong side of the road and have the steering wheel on the opposite side, so if any one has information from other countries please tell me and I'll make a different question. Now I believe it's safe to say you're not leading from directly ahead because all you'll do is pull (when you really want to do a little of both) and because of the weird position that it puts your arm in! And leading (which makes behind an odd answer because it's supposed to be leading not following) from behind is the perfect place for a nice kick!
